Fibre Channel use in ALICE

The ALICE project will investigate the different options possible for making a DAQ system for this application. For this purpose they are measuring performance of Emulex Fibre Channel PCI boards on IBM RS6000/43P machines and on Motorola PowerPC VME processor boards. The contact person for this is Roberto Divia.

Data rates

ALICE expects that each event will contain 20 to 30 MByte of data after zero suppression and after level 1 triggering. The disparity in event size will be small. Each event will contain about 8000 tracks. There is no level two triggering on-line.

The event rate after level 1 triggering is 50 Hz. This gives in total a total data volume of 1 GByte/sec.
