.......A General Introduction ......

This was the fifth in an ongoing series on high-speed LAN technologies. Earlier articles have addressed
100VG-AnyLAN, (see "100 VG-AnyLAN: The Other Fast Ethernet," March 1995),
Fibre Channel (see February 1995), FDDI (see December 1994), and fast Ethernet (see November 1994).

A SHORT OVERVIEW
- HIPPI is an abbreviation for "High Performance Parallel Interface"
- HIPPI is an ANSI standard ( ANSI X3T9.3 document number X3T9.3/90-043, 1990 )
- HIPPI is a point to point link for high speed data transfer at 100 MBytes/sec or 200 MBytes/sec
- HIPPI uses 50 twisted pair copper cable with a maximum specified length of 25 meter.
- Using non blocking crossbar switches, very powerful HIPPI networks can be build.
- HIPPI switches are commercially available from several sources in a range from 8X8 up to 32X32 connections
- HIPPI-Serial specifies HIPPI connections for 100mbytes/sec. and 200 Mbytes/sec using optical fiber.
- HIPPI-6400 proposes a network standard allowing 6.4 GBits/sec in each direction.
- HIPPI specifications can be found as working documents form the HIPPI Network Forum.
- The following specifications exist:
HIPPI-PH
800 & 1600 Mbit/s Physical Layer ( ANSI X3T9.3/91-005 ) |
HIPPI-SC
800 & 1600 Mbit/s Switch Control (ANSI X3.222-1997 ) |
HIPPI-AC
Auto Configuration of HIPPI switches. |
HIPPI-FP
Framing Protocol
( ANSI X3.210-1992 ) |
HIPPI-LE Encapsulation of IEEE 802.2 over HIPPI
( ANSI X3.210-1992 ) |
MIBs
for HIPPI-800 and HIPPI-6400 |
ARP and IP over HIPPI,
the Internet Protocol (IP) over HIPPI LANs (an IETF project) |
FC-FP
Sending HIPPI-FP packets over Fibre Channel Physical Layer |
HIPPI-ATM
Sending encapsulated HIPPI-PH information over ATM (X3.299-1997 ) |

- For longer distances connections their is a SERIAL-HIPPI specification with a Baud rate of 1.2 Gbaud
- SERIAL-HIPPI using coaxial cable is specified for distances up to 25 meter.
- SERIAL-HIPPI using Multi Mode Optical Fiber is specified for distances up to 1 Km..
- SERIAL-HIPPI using Single Mode Optical Fiber is specified for distances up to 10 Km.
- SERIAL-HIPPI specifications can be found as working documents form the HIPPI Network Forum.
- .The most important is HIPPI-Serial 800 Mbit/s serial HIPPI physical layer ( ANSI X3.300-1997 )

HIPPI-6400 is the project name for the development of a new technology very fast network standard.
In 1997 it was decided that the Commercial name is Gigabyte System Network or GSN.
For information see the Gigabyte System Network pages that are part of the
CERN HIGH SPEED INTERCONNECT pages.
